The title of this video piece, Wo fass ich dich, unendliche Natur? (How Can I Grasp You, Endless Nature?), is drawn from a verse in Goethe’s Faust.
The work offers a personal reading of Faust as a quintessential figure in German literature who, through tragic ambition, embodies scientific hubris and a disregard for life. This interpretation is set against the negatively contrasted footage of a contemporary coal-mining machine in Cottbus, whose relentless grasping gestures echo Faust’s desire to seize and master nature.
An off-screen female narrator whispers selected passages from the play, while the machine’s movements—shown in reverse—suggest the earth being drawn back toward its origin.
